Look for this amazing Gulla-Geechee woman's cookbooks filled with stories: Vertamae Cooks Again: More Recipes. I heard her once at the Savannah Book Festival and she's a gem of the south. Similarly, check out Bomb Biscuit in Atlanta for a similar SC native-owned restaurant with family stories and a cookbook!
Thanks, Cindy. I was so struck by Gulla-Geechee food as it was served in Charleston, and its roots in Barbados. Bomb Biscuit, I gotta say, is a great name.
Craig, it's me, Cindy Schroeder/Diehl. Married happily again... spent 5 years in Germany 2012-2017; sad to come home after 1st crazy Trump election. We're back in Savannah half year and Jasper (GA mountains) half year. Hope you and your family are well. A student of mine, Philip Rucker, worked for Wash Post and wrote two books on Trump presidency; maybe you met him? He gave me the Yale Shakespeare as graduation present. Weird how this world turns. I had a niece from Ronald Reagan High School in Texas graduate KSU architecture school in 2019 and campus was friendly and beautiful when we attended.
What a story, Craig. Not sure who the esteemed editors are who passed on this gem but they have my disdain. Such great writing and storytelling. It actually makes me want to go back to Charleston and even to Barbados, which is no small feat since I hate flying so much. I'm going to send you a couple thoughts on where else to submit it over email.
Yeah, wineries in northwest Georgia are the same...a few vine sprigs so they can call themselves a vineyard, but most of the wine is expensive and uninteresting mashups from California vats shipped in. People from Atlanta love the atmosphere: like you describe with beautiful mountain views, spots for Instagram bridal photos, and danged if there isn't a light-covered Christie cross for evening protection.

Thanks, Jimmy. Barbados is worth the cramped flight in coach, I swear, with or without the Charleston thing.
